Mindoro oil spill to reach Palawan
THE Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) said that an oil spill from the sunken vessel off the coast of Naujan, Oriental Mindoro will reach Cuyo Islands in northern Palawan in a week’s time.
In its latest report from the University of the Philippines Marine Science Institute (UP-MSI), the DENR forecasts that the projected spill will continue due southwest in the direction of northern Palawan.
“Using the modeled oil spill trajectories and looking at higher resolution data, we approximate that 20,000 hectares of coral reef, 9,900 hectares of mangroves and 6,000 hectares of seagrass may be affected by the oil slick in the following municipalities. More than half of potentially affected reefs (11,000 hectares) are found in the Cuyo group of islands,” the UP-MSI said.
The DENR added that department and UP-MSI are performing di
